Outstanding centering with wonderfully balanced margins, deep shade and detailed impression, lightly cancelled by duplex datestamp with “Mar. 5” date visible, two slightly shorter perfs at left not mentioned on accompanying P.F. certificate EXTREMELY FINE. THIS OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE HAS BEEN GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED. ONLY 24 USED EXAMPLES ARE CONTAINED IN OUR CENSUS AND THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE IS UNQUESTIONABLY ONE OF THE FINEST EXTANT. Our Our census of Scott 103 used, available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/ dynamic/census/103/103.pdf ,contains 24 copies. However, of these only five or six have centering we would consider Very Fine, and perhaps a couple others could be considered Extremely Fine. Several of the possibly sound examples have not been examined in decades and may in fact not be sound. The example offered here, with wide balanced margins and a relatively light cancel, is a true condition rarity and clearly among the very finest examples known. Census No. 103-CAN-24. With 2014 P.F. certificate as sound. With 2013 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ value $52,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded to a used example and one of only three to achieve this grade

2c Black, Re-Issue (Scott 103). Block of four, original gum, lightly hinged, intense shade and proof-like impression, single short perf at lower right, faint corner crease at upper right and a few rejoined perfs at right FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED BLOCKS OF THE 2-CENT “BLACK JACK” RE-ISSUE The 2c Re-Issue was printed from a new plate of 100 subjects, compared to the original plate of 200 in two panes. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). Only 979 of the 2c were sold; the remaining 9,021 were destroyed on July 16, 1884. The 2c plate can be easily identified by a spot on the cheek. The other recorded block is part of the famous Caspary set of 1861 Re-Issue blocks and is, for all practical purposes, unavailable to collectors as an individual block. With 1972 P.F. certificate.
