1869, 3¢ ultramarine, gray paper, without grill (114a var.), original gum, natural straight edge, tied by “Wooster O. Aug 30” c.d.s. duplex on “Teeple’s Photograph Library” illustrated corner card envelope to Xenia, Ohio; stamp lifted and then hinged in place, cover reduced at right, Very Fine. Estimate 3,000 – 4,000 THIS IS ONE OF TWO CERTIFIED EXAMPLES OF THE RARE GRAY PAPER VARIEY WITHOUT GRILL, AND THE ONLY ONE ON COVER, THE OTHER BEING AN ON PIECE STRIP OF THREE. Expertization: 1991 P.F. Certificate. The Scott Catalogue states in the same footnote referenced in the previous lot that “the 114a used on gray paper (is)…unique” citing the above mentioned strip of three as the unique example. Once again, we have no idea why this was missed, and the editors have been informed of this omission as well.
