USA (78) 1862 WASHINGTON 24¢ DARK LILAC An interesting situation, according to the 1990 PSE Cert this is the rare Scott #78c 24¢ blackish violet (cats $20,000), ‘genuine used with black cork cancel,’ but we believe it as #78 24¢ dark lilac, and offer the stamp as such. Extremely fine and attractive. (Copy of 1990 PSE Cert #15468) Cat price $350.

1863, 24¢ lilac (Scott 78), left margin block of 4, o.g., small hinge remnant, extraordinary fresh mint block of four with the most brilliant color we have ever seen on this issue, a magnificent multiple with gleaming fresh full original gum in a fabulous state of preservation, quite possibly the finest remaining mint intact block; bottom right stamp with a single short perf along right side, Very Good to Fine, with 2014 P.S.E. certificate graded VG 50. Scott $18,000. Estimate value $3,000 – 4,000.

York Am. Pkt. 7 Paid Apr. 14” credit datestamp, blue boxed “Aachen Franco” transit datestamp, receiving backstamp, minor wear at top from opening VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL THREE-COLOR 1861 ISSUE FRANKING TIED BY CLOVER LEAF FANCY CANCEL ON A COVER TO GERMANY. Examples of pictorial fancy cancels applied at the New York foreign-mail exchange office are very rare and unusual. The Horse Head, Union Soldier’s Head and this Clover Leaf come to mind.
