2c Navy, “Sepcimen” Error (Scott O36Sa). Without gum as issued, bright color, faint pressed-out horizontal crease, tiny thin speck at bottom FINE CENTERING. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT NAVY DEPARTMENT “SEPCIMEN” ERROR. Although the sold quantity would suggest a fair number of “Sepcimen” errors were sold (1,748 stamps, or 18 sheets), the 2c Navy “Sepcimen” is very rare. In addition to the single offered here, we located two copies in the Miller collection (on extended loan by The New York Public Library to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum), one in the Sheriff sale (Siegel Sale 752, lot 495, stamp trimmed at top), and one in the Lewenthal collection (light toning). The Markovits collection was missing this error. Therefore, of the five copies known to us, only three are available to collectors. Combs also observed its rarity and commented that “there should be some more copies around some place” (page 39) — apparently not.
