Documentary, 1871, Second Issue, $200 red, blue & black (Scott R132), 1871 manuscript cancel, fresh and excellent example of this much such after stamp; single shorter perf at right does not detract from the appearance, Very Fine. Scott price $9,000. Kingsley identified only 121 examples. He thought that only 19 were sound and without a cut cancel. He theorizes that at most 200 examples exist of this highly desirable and eye catching stamp .

$200.00 Red, Blue & Black, Second Issue, “Small Persian Rug” (Scott R132). With selvage on two sides including imprint at right, rich colors, neat magenta 1872 manuscript cancel VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THE $200.00 SMALL “PERSIAN RUG” ISSUE, WITH SELVAGE ON TWO SIDES AND SHOWING PART OF THE IMPRINT. These were printed in sheets of one with selvage on all sides. Only one is known with the full imprint (offered in our 2000 Zoellner sale, realized $32,500 hammer). This is the only other with part imprint. Ex Griswold (“Eastern” Collection). Illustrated in the Kinglsey book on p. 36.

$200.00 Red, Blue & Black, Second Issue, “Small Persian Rug” (Scott R132). Bright colors, bold blue “Wilkes Barre Coal & Iron Co. N.Y. Apr. 11, 1872” double-oval datestamp and manuscript cancel, tiny thin spot at bottom right FINE APPEARING AND LOVELY EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL STAMPS IN UNITED STATES PHILATELY. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE HANDSTAMP CANCEL. Both the Small and Large “Persian Rug” stamps were printed in sheets of one. Because of their size, the large number of perforations on each stamp, and the fact that they were used on documents which were frequently folded across the stamps, sound examples of the multicolored “Persian Rug” issues are extremely rare. Only 446 of the small “Persian Rug” were issued. We have offered only three others with handstamp cancels in our sales since 1993 and our Rarities of the World sales since 1964, including two others with Wilkes Barre double ovals.
