$1.00 Black, Ty. II (Scott 261A). Mint N.H., deep shade on crisp paper, choice centering with wide margins EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1894 UNWATERMARKED TYPE II BUREAU ISSUE. ONE OF THE FINEST COPIES IN EXISTENCE. As discussed in the prior two lots, collectors of this issue know that it is extremely difficult to find the 1894 Bureau Issue in centered, Mint Never-Hinged condition, particularly the higher denominations. This is mostly due to production problems as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing assumed responsibility for stamp production after the American Bank Note contract expired. P.S.E. encapsulated (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $34,700.00). Only one has graded higher to date (95J) in the P.S.E. Population Report and no other examples share this desirable grade.

$1.00 Black, Ty. II (261A). Block of four, intense impression, New York oval cancels, remarkably choice centering, right pair with minor faults, few perf separations sensibly reinforced EXTREMELY FINE CENTERING AND AN INCALCULABLY RARE USED BLOCK OF THE $1.00 1894 UNWATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. A block of four is the largest recorded used multiple of the $1.00 Type II 1894 Unwatermarked Bureau Issue, according to Linn’s U.S. Stamp Facts. We have not maintained records of Bureau multiples, but estimate that no more than five or six used blocks of Scott 261A exist. This is the only one located with Power Search. Ex Twigg-Smith.

$1.00 Black, Ty. II (261A). Block of four, original gum, barely hinged, intense shade on bright paper VERY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE $1.00 TYPE II UNWATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. VERY FEW MULTIPLES ARE KNOWN. According to Brookman, the Type II stamps, with circles complete around the bottom left denomination, were not discovered until several years after the stamp was issued. Its discoverer was the custodian of the National stamp collection, who determined that the Type II stamps are found on only five rows of the plate. Brookman estimated that only 8,762 were distributed. We have only offered one other block of four and the remarkable block of six (ex Whitman) since 1997. Scott Catalogue assigns a paltry $700.00 premium for the block of four versus four singles.
