5c Brown Yellow (67a). Original gum, h.r., radiant color in the true Brown Yellow shade FINE. AN EXCEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1861-66 ISSUE IN THE BROWN YELLOW SHADE. WE HAVE ONLY SOLD TEN OTHERS SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS. The 5c Brown Yellow is recognized as being among the rarest of 1861-66 Issue stamps in sound original-gum condition. Perhaps the only shade varieties rarer than the 5c Brown Yellow are the 3c Pigeon Blood Pink and 24c Blackish Violet (Scott 64a and 78c). 5c Buff (67). Original gum, barest trace of hinging, deep rich color and proof-like impression on crisp paper, long and full perforations all around VERY FINE. A RARE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 5-CENT BUFF. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL CLASSIC ISSUES TO OBTAIN IN SUCH CHOICE SOUND AND CENTERED ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. The 5c Buff and its shade varieties (Brown Yellow and Olive Yellow) are recognized as being among the rarest of 1861-66 Issue stamps in sound original-gum condition. Perhaps the only shade varieties rarer than the 5c Buff are the 3c Pigeon Blood Pink and 24c Blackish Violet (Scott 64a and 78c), but Scott 67 is a major Scott listing and is, therefore, more significant to completion of the series. A review using Power Search supports our claim. We have offered only one sound original-gum example centered better than Fine since 2000. With 1984 and 2000 P.F. certificates Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Jan 2009, Sale 968, Lot 81 |

5c Brown Yellow (67a). Original gum, lightly hinged, beautiful brilliant shade and impression on bright paper, a very early printing with fine detail of background and lathework clearly visible, choice centering EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1861 5-CENT BROWN YELLOW IS ONE OF THE RAREST STAMPS OF THE 1861-66 ISSUE IN SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION — IT IS UNLIKELY THAT MORE THAN A DOZEN EXAMPLES EXIST AS SUCH. THIS STAMP — WITH ITS LIGHTLY-HINGED ORIGINAL GUM AND BRILLIANT COLOR — IS AMONG THE MOST ATTRACTIVE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. As noted, the 5c Brown Yellow and its shade varieties (Buff and Olive Yellow) are recognized as being among the rarest of 1861-66 Issue stamps in sound original-gum condition. Perhaps the only shade varieties rarer than the 5c Brown Yellow are the 3c Pigeon Blood Pink and 24c Blackish Violet (Scott 64a and 78c). 5c Buff (Scott 67). Rich color and detailed impression, choice centering with balanced margins, neat grid cancel EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUFF 1861 ISSUE. Due to narrow spacing on the 5c plate, it is very difficult to find centered copies with the perforations clear of the design on all sides. The stamp offered here, with its choice centering, may be considered a condition rarity. With 2002 and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90, SMQ $2,500.00). Only three have graded higher to date and only eleven others share this grade Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Dec 2008, Sale 967, Lot 4168 |
