15c Brown & Blue, Re-Issue, Imperforate Horizontally (Scott 129a). Original gum, deep rich colors and proof-like impressions, wide nicely proportioned margins EXTREMELY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY FRESH ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. A TRUE CONDITION RARITY AND AMONG THE FINEST EXTANT. In United States Postage Stamps of 1869, author Jonathan Rose states that only one sheet of 100 was issued. A significantly smaller group are still known to exist. Many are without gum, not well-centered, or faulty. The stamp offered here is one of the finest we have ever encountered, and it is comparable to the Whitman copy sold in Sale 968 for $32,500.00 hammer. With 1982 and 2002 P.F. certificates Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Dec 2010, Sale 1000, Lot 1087 |

15c Brown & Blue, Re-Issue, Imperforate Horizontally (Scott 129a). With plate no. 32 and part imprint at top, original gum, rich colors and proof-like impressions, horizontal crease between stamp and sheet margin, few perfs trimmed at left VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE VARIETY IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND WITH ORIGINAL GUM AND THIS PLATE NUMBER AND IMPRINT SINGLE IS UNIQUE. A MAGNIFICENT SHOWPIECE. Jonathan W. Rose, in his book United States Postage Stamps of 1869, estimates that no more than five to ten copies of this error exist (our own estimate is 20-30, two are known used). Only one sheet of 100 was issued, and all were cut into singles by a clerk in the Third Assistant Postmaster General’s office. It is not known how many were sold. We have only sold two other examples with original gum since 2003. Many seem to lack gum. With 1985 P.F. certificate Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Sep 2010, Sale 993, Lot 531 |
