1860, 5¢ brown, type II (30A), remarkably well centered with perforations free of design all around; deep, dark color, strong impression and full, very lightly hinged original gum;. Scott $2,200 AN EXQUISITE EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE II 5¢ BROWN, A STAMP THAT IS VIRTUALLY NEVER SEEN THIS CHOICE. Expertization: 1984, 1995 & 2009 PF Certificates. Provenance: Caspary, Whitman. By the time the Civil war brought about the demonetization of the 1857-61 issue, the type II 5¢ brown had been replaced by the 5¢ orange brown in Post Office stocks. So where as the 5¢ orange brown is very difficult to find in choice used condition (see above lot), the 5¢ brown is virtually non-existent in choice mint condition.
