2c Pan-American, Center Inverted (Scott 295a). Small h.r., intense colors, negligible small corner crease at bottom left, tiny paper spot at bottom of vignette frame VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A WONDERFULLY-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT. ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED INVERT ERRORS IN AMERICAN PHILATELY. The 2c is the rarest of the three Pan-American Inverts. It is surmised that approximately 200 were issued through the post office, with two distinct shades known. Our Levi records contain the intact block (4), reconstructed block (4), 64 unused singles and 6 used singles, for a total of 72 unused and 6 used. Many of the unused singles have disturbed gum or no gum, and/or are off center to top or top left. The example offered here, with no obvious flaws, is among the finest-appearing examples With 1982 Sorani and 1997 P.F. certificates.

2c Pan-American (Scott 295). Mathematically perfect centering with wide margins, vivid color on bright white paper, neat machine cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb example of this stamp in every respect, with 2011 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100, SMQ value $800.00 as 98, unpriced in higher grades), this is one of only two examples of this stamp to achieve this perfect grade with none higher, more than 209 million of the 2c were issued, yet to find a used example with margins such as this is an enormous challenge

2c Pan-American, Center Inverted (295a). Bright colors and choice centering, stitch watermark, clear machine cancel leaves entire design clearly visible, vertical crease VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY SEVEN USED EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT ARE KNOWN, AND NONE ARE SOUND. THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE, WITH UNUSUALLY CHOICE CENTERING, AN UNOBTRUSIVE CANCEL AND A CREASE, IS ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE. Our census of the 2c Pan-American Invert in used condition records only seven copies, which are illustrated below and available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/295a/295a.pdf . None is sound — two are reperfed, one has a tear and another is thinned. Only three stamps have minor flaws. Census No. 295a-CAN-02. Ex Goldsmith, Silberberg and Hewitt. With 1971, 1980 and 2005 P.F. certificates. In our opinion this is very undercatalogued in Scott — the unused invert catalogues $55,000.00 in Scott and is significantly more plentiful with approximately 64 unused singles known, versus $60,000.00 for the used with only seven known.

1901, 2¢ Pan-American, center inverted (295a), virtually perfectly centered amid remarkably large margins with strong color for this frequently pale invert; full original gum, tiny, virtually unnoticeable trace of a prior natural inclusion above left “2” (noted only on the 2006 certificate); fresh and choice, Extremely Fine. Scott $55,000+ ONE OF THE BEST CENTERED EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE INVERT AND ONE OF THE FEW WITH FULL ORIGINAL GUM. Expertization: 1964, 1989, 2000 & 2006 PF Certificates. Provenance: Gorham. The 2¢ is the rarest of the regularly issued Pan-American Inverts with probably no more than 200 being issued. This supposition is based on the fact that two shades of the error exist, meaning that at least two panes of 100 were released; also upon the current estimate that approximately 150 examples have survived, including about a half dozen used singles and two mint blocks (one rejoined). Scott also states that “almost all unused examples…have partial of disurbed gum” and values the stamp accordingly.
