2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (449). Mint N.H. joint line pair, brilliant color and detailed impression, choice centering EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED JOINT LINE PAIR OF THE 1915 2-CENT TYPE I VERTICAL COIL. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY. Type I rotary press stamps were produced using the same master dies as had been used for flat plate printings. However, due to the curve of the plate to fit the rotary press, the impressions lacked some of the details of the flat plate printings. New dies were made with strengthened lines, resulting in the Type II stamps. After plate wear was noticed, further strengthening was necessary, resulting in the Type III stamps. Scott 449 was not produced until almost a year and a half after the Type I horizontal coil, Scott 453. Due to the unpopularity of vertical coils, this Type I stamp was in production for only a short period of time before being discontinued. This issue is very difficult to find as a Mint N.H. joint line pair. The last we offered was in our Whitman sale in 2009. With 1973 and 2005 P.F. certificates as joint line strip of three.

2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (449). Joint line pair, radiant color, bold cancel dated either 1916 or 1918, exceptionally choice centering for this difficult issue EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY CONFIRMED SOUND AND CENTERED USED JOINT LINE PAIR OF THE 2-CENT TYPE I VERTICAL COIL, SCOTT 449. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF UNITED STATES COIL COLLECTING. The 2c Type I rotary plate was used very briefly to make vertical coils issued in late 1915. It was briefly used because the Type I plate was not very deeply engraved and the curvature of the rotary press yielded impressions lacking in some of the details. The Bureau noticed this immediately, and quickly replaced it with the Type III plate (according to Scott, the EDU for No. 449 is Oct. 29, 1915 and the EDU for Type III is Dec. 21, 1915). Our census of Scott 449 used joint line pairs, available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/449/449.pdf , records a total of ten used joint line pairs and one in a strip of four. Of these six have faults. Of the five sound examples, two have not been seen in a long time and need to be examined to confirm soundness. The other two (Nos. 8 and 9) have perfs almost touching the design at top. This leaves the example offered here as the only confirmed sound and centered used joint line pair of this rarity. Ex Anderson. With 1992 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85, SMQ $30,800.00). This is the only graded used joint line pair of this issue, which is unpriced in any higher grade. We were told at the time of grading that five points were taken off for the heavy cancel, but the use of a year-dated contemporary datestamp is, in our opinion, a positive attribute.

2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (449). Pair, bottom stamp Mint N.H., top stamp lightly hinged, glowing color, as fresh as the day it was printed, choice centering with unusually wide and balanced margins EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL PAIR OF THE 2-CENT TYPE I VERTICAL COIL, SCOTT 449. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE BOTTOM STAMP IN MINT NEVER-HINGED CONDITION. Due to the unpopularity of vertical coils, this Type I stamp was in production for only a short period of time before being discontinued. Ex Scarsdale. Bottom stamp with Ward backstamp. With 1998 P.F. and 2012 P.S.E. certificates (F-VF 75; unpriced in SMQ).

2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (449). Mint N.H. joint line strip of four, top pair light purple “Jan 6, 1916” backstamp, bottom pair pencil notations on gum, perfectly even imperforate margins, characteristic deep Red color, detailed impression VERY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARILY RARE JOINT LINE STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 1915 2-CENT TYPE I VERTICAL COIL. 449 is Oct. 29, 1915, and the EDU for Type III is Dec. 10, 1915). The joint line strip of four offered here is the only example contained in Power Search in Mint N.H. condition (despite the markings on the gum). The Zoellner collection contained a hinged example. With 1972 and 2008 P.F. certificates, the latter stating Mint N.H.. Scott Retail as Mint N.H.
