AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF THE 24-CENT 1918 AIR POST ISSUE WITH BLUE “TOP” ONLY. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF UNITED STATES AIR POST PHILATELY. The first printing of the 24c 1918 Air Post issue was trimmed so that the plate numbers and arrow were removed, resulting in a straight edge at top and right. After the invert error was discovered on one of the first printed sheets, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing decided to retain the top selvage. It added the word TOP” to the blue Jenny” vignette plate, so that when the new sheets were printed the word TOP” would appear in the newly-retained upper selvage. This would show the pressmen the correct direction of the blue Jenny” vignette plate, to insure that the invert error would not reoccur. Shortly after the blue “TOP” was added, sheets were printed with the additional red “TOP”. According to Don Price’s exhibit of this issue and research by Joe Kirker, only 22 blue TOP” only blocks are recorded.

The Inverted Jenny is one of the most recognized and desired rarities in all of philately. Its legendary status began the moment the stamp was issued in May, 1918, when William T. Robey purchased an entire error sheet of 100 at the New York Avenue Post Office window in Washington D.C., one day after the stamp was issued on May 14th. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT ST. LOUIS “BEARS” POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL ISSUE ON GRAY LILAC PAPER. The layout of the plate was altered just before the paper was changed from Greenish to Gray Lilac paper. The original layout contained three 5c stamps at left and three 10c stamps at right. The plate was altered, and the top two 5c stamps were converted to 20c stamps. Only one position, the bottom left position of the plate, yielded 5c stamps. The new plate layout, combined with limited production from the altered plate before it was converted back again to its original format, accounts for the rarity of the 5c on Gray Lilac paper. The last printing of the New York provisional was furnished on January 7, 1847, when 100 sheets were delivered. Philip T. New York N.Y., 5c Black, Without Signature, Stitch Watermark (9X1e var). Large even margins, detailed impression on crisp paper, neat strike of red “PAID” handstamp EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL ISSUE WITHOUT SIGNATURE AND WITH A STITCH WATERMARK. THIS IS THE FINEST WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS. While stitch watermarks are occasionally seen on the U.S. 1847 Issue, they are extremely rare on the New York Postmaster’s Provisional. Philip T. Wall discussed stitch watermarks on the New York provisionals in Chronicle 112 (p. 227), citing Philip H. Ward’s 1926 article in Mekeel’s Stamp News about a stitch watermark example that was the first Ward had ever encountered. Wall stated that this is the only reference he had ever read about the variety and had never encountered one himself. With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95, unpriced in SMQ). This is the highest grade awarded to date for a normal 9X1e and the only example to achieve this grade.

Dec. 25” circular datestamp with red “Paid” in ribbon (both also reproductions of post office markings), Very Fine and fascinating, in 1932 the New Haven Philatelic Society obtained the original brass handstamp and used it to produce the “Final Reprints” on white wove, each of which were numbered and placed inside an informational booklet and sold for $5.00 each, the handstamp was reportedly then treated to prevent further re-use, apparently this “cover” was produced at the same time as the Final Reprints, with 1991 P.F. certificate stating “reprint made in 1932 from the original handstamp”
