3c Vermilion (214). Mint N.H. with top left corner selvage, vibrant color as fresh as the day it was printed, perfectly centered with Jumbo margins all around EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLES OF THE 1887 3-CENT VERMILION AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. THIS HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E., AND IT IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST AWARDED TO DATE. The 3c Vermilion can be found with wide margins, but rarely with wide margins and precise centering. This corner-margin example in Mint N.H. condition — perfectly centered within enormous balanced margins — is destined to become Number 1 in any condition census of Scott 214. Ex Morris and Westchester. With 1991 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ price $4,800.00 as 98). This is the highest grade awarded to date and the only example to achieve this grade. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Dec 2009, Sale 978, Lot 1052 |
