Block of 70 from the upper-right portion of the sheet of 300, containing a top imprint and plate no. 28 block and right arrow block, part imprint at bottom right, approximately 20 or more stamps Mint N.H., h.r. or paper adherences on many of the others (including on part of plate block), overall choice centering with several extremely well-centered, one hinged single in the lower right portion of the multiple (Position 50 along the arrow) is an Extremely Fine Gem, some sensible perf reinforcements, couple creases in the selvage and slightly affecting a few stamps toward the bottom OVERALL VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARY LARGE MULTIPLE OF THE 1869 2c POST RIDER CONTAINING AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE AND WELL-CENTERED IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER BLOCK. Rich color, cancelled by two strikes of “Hiogo, Japan” double-circle handstamp, Fine example of this cancel which is scarce on the 2c 1869 Pictorial Issue, the U.S. Post Office opened in Hiogo in 1868, one year after those in Yokohama and Nagasaki, and was in operation until December 1874, the rate was 10c to the U.S., 3c or 6c between Treaty Ports and additional rates to Europe, some covers exist with large frankings of the 2c so this denomination must have been readily available in Hiogo, however, we have only offered seven other off-cover examples since keeping computerized records and most are faulty or off-center, with 2006 P.F. certificate Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Mar 2011, Sale 1007, Lot 2274 |
