5c Brown Orange (Scott 1d). Light shade, large margins including part of adjoining stamp at top to just in, cancelled by magenta manuscript, tied by red “Colonies &c Art. 13” Anglo-French accountancy handstamp and black French transits on blue 1851 folded cover to Redon, France, red “New-York Apr. 8” circular datestamp, endorsed “Steamer Canada” and carried aboard that Cunarder which departed Boston on April 9, transit and receiving backstamps, stamp also tied by French due marking, stamp with light vertical crease at left FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE BROWN ORANGE SHADE ON A COVER TO FRANCE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE TIED BY FOUR DIFFERENT MARKINGS, INCLUDING THE ANGLO-FRENCH ACCOUNTANCY HANDSTAMP. Anglo-French accountancy markings were applied on mail to France sent via Great Britain. The marking indicates they were unpaid letters exchanged with France arriving from countries overseas. By mid-1851 the markings were no longer used. Ex Oakley. With 1992 P.F. certificate

Large margins to clear, tied by well-struck green “Ithaca N.Y. 2 Jul.” circular datestamp on buff cover to Utica N.Y., trivial wear including faint horizontal file fold barely affecting stamp and not mentioned on accompanying certificate VERY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE USE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE CANCELLED SOLELY BY A GREEN CIRCULAR DATESTAMP. The Alexander census records only three covers from Ithaca with a green cancel. This is the earliest and it is also the only one cancelled by the circular datestamp — the other two are cancelled by green grids. Ex Haas. With 1990 P.F. certificate.
