Mint N.H. top right corner selvage imprint and plate no. 26 block of 18, natural short gum at part of top, several bottom stamps with split grills and showing the uneven application of the grill, radiant color, pos. 3 small toned spot VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE BLOCK OF 18 OF THE 3-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE SPLIT GRILL. This is the first time this plate block has been offered at auction since it was broken out of a complete sheet. Scott Retail as hinged with no premium for the split grills.

3c Ultramarine (Scott 114). Rich color, tied by perfect strike of Buttonless Shoe fancy cancel of Waterbury Conn. (Rohloff O-12) and by “Waterbury Ct. Mar. 21” (1870) circular datestamp on cover to H. B. Shaw of Alfred Me., second strike of circular datestamp and Shoe at right EXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THE RARE AND DESIRABLE “CONGRESS GAITER” BUTTONLESS SHOE FANCY CANCELLATION. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCTIVE WATERBURY FANCY CANCELLATIONS. According to Wikipedia, this style of buttonless shoe was invented for Queen Victoria in 1836, utilizing stretchable rubber (a new invention) at the sides in place of laces but still keeping the profile of lace-ups. Its feminine image was soon lost and was adopted by male wearers, at which time it was dubbed the Congress Gaiter or Boston Boot in the United States. William T. Mar. 26” (1870) circular datestamp on cover to Washington Conn., barely reduced at right VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE RARE LARGE WATERBURY SHIELD ON COVER. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN. A GREAT RARITY. William T. Crowe records five covers with this cancel in his Waterbury census. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST STRIKE OF THE WATERBURY SMALL BEE FANCY CANCELLATION IN EXISTENCE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE ON A WATERBURY HOTEL CORNER CARD COVER. ONE OF THE FINEST OF ALL WATERBURY COVERS. The Small Bee cancel is not the rarest of Waterbury designs (21 covers recorded by William T. Crowe), but full and clear strikes are extremely rare.
