Clearly-defined grill which is easily visible on the front of the stamp, brilliant color, beautiful centering with Jumbo margins, bold cork cancel EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A GORGEOUS USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 7-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE, WITH WIDE MARGINS, RADIANT COLOR AND A VERY CLEAR GRILL. A REAL CONDITION RARITY. This denomination was issued almost a year after the others in the series. It was primarily used to pay the rate via Prussian Closed Mail to Germany and Austria (via England), which was reduced from 10c to 7c on October 1, 1871, and later to pay the 7c rate to Denmark, Hungary and Luxembourg. Scott value $550 AN EXTRAORDINARY 7¢ GRILL WITH EXCEPTIONAL CENTERING, REMARKABLE COLOR AND A STRIKING CANCELLATION. Expertization: 1999 PF Certificate. This cancel is similar to New York’s foreign mail cancels but is part of a duplex device that was used only domestically.
