2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (449). Joint line pair, brilliant color, well-proportioned margins for this difficult issue FINE-VERY FINE. A REMARKABLY FRESH ORIGINAL-GUM JOINT LINE PAIR OF THE 2-CENT VERTICAL COIL, SCOTT 449. The 2c Type I rotary plate was used very briefly to make vertical coils issued in late 1915. It was briefly used because the Type I plate was not very deeply engraved and the curvature of the rotary press yielded impressions lacking in some of the details. The Bureau noticed this immediately, and quickly replaced it with the Type III plate (according to Scott, the EDU for No. 449 is Oct. 29, 1915 and the EDU for Type III is Dec. 21, 1915). With 1965 P.F. certificate

2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (449). Pair, barest trace of what may (or may not) be hinging, brilliant color on crisp paper, wide and balanced margins for this difficult issue EXTREMELY FINE. A STUNNING PAIR OF THE 1915 2-CENT TYPE I VERTICAL COIL, SCOTT 449. Type I rotary press stamps were produced using the same master dies as had been used for flat plate printings. However, due to the curve of the plate to fit the rotary press, the impressions lacked some of the details of the flat plate printings. New dies were made with strengthened lines, resulting in the Type II stamps. After plate wear was noticed, further strengthening was necessary, resulting in the Type III stamps. Scott 449 was not produced until almost a year and a half after the Type I horizontal coil, Scott 453. Due to the unpopularity of vertical coils, this Type I stamp was in production for only a short period of time before being discontinued. With 1990 P.F. certificate as previously hinged on the top stamp, 1998 P.F. certificate as Mint N.H., and 2008 P.S.E. certificate as previously hinged, but with note implying bottom stamp is Mint N.H. (OGph, XF 90, SMQ price $8,300.00)

2c Red, Ty. I, Coil (Scott 449). Joint line pair, face-free oval cancel, fresh and bright color, wide margins at sides, perfs intact at top and bottom, negligible tiny tear at bottom left FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY TEN USED JOINT LINE PAIRS AND ONE USED JOINT LINE STRIP OF FOUR OF SCOTT 449 HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION. A MAJOR RARITY. The 2c Type I rotary plate was used very briefly to make vertical coils issued in December 1915. It was superseded in February 1916 by the Type III plate. The early printing of the 2c Rotary Vertical Coil was almost completely overlooked by contemporary collectors and dealers, who did not anticipate further production of vertical coils. With the basic letter rate at 2c, used coil multiples are extremely rare. Of the ten recorded used joint line pairs, only three are sound and centered. The finest used line pair realized $52,500 hammer at auction approximately one year ago. With 1987 P.F. certificate
