Paid 19” exchange c.d.s., red “London Paid JA25 64” arrival datestamp; minor professional cosmetic repairs not affecting the stamp, a Very Fine appearing usage for this very rare shade. Estimate 500 – 750 Expertization: Signed by Ashbrook. Provenance: Krug, Herzog, Friend. Ashbrook’s note on the reverse reads, “This is a splendid color example of the 24¢ 1861 brown lilac and decidedly a very rare cover.” William K. Herzog illustrates this cover in his article titled “24¢ Baltimore Reddish Brown” in The Chronicle, No. 123, Vol. 36, August 1984, pp. 197-98, and describes it as the rare “Baltimore reddish brown” shade.
