Scott C3, 1918 24c Carmine rose and blue,New York 1922 double oval cancel on perfectly centered and fault free 24c bi-plane affectionately called the Jenny based on the “JN” series of bi-planes built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company and sold as surplus after World War I. This fueled the early aviation craze of the 1920s and 30s and largely built the early airmail fleet. This was the first U.S. airmail stamp issued and is the normal version of the famous “Inverted Jenny” which some call the most popular error in U.S. philately, so much so that the post office commemorated this issue with the recent souvenir sheet. This is the first and only used C3 ever graded 100 by PSE. 2014 PSE Graded GEM 100 certificate. H.R. Harmer, Oct 2014, Sale 3006, Lot 1460 |
