3c Pink (64). Original gum, lightly hinged, bright color in the true Pink shade, choice centering with well-proportioned margins EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 3-CENT PINK. ONE OF THE RAREST 1861 ISSUE SHADES IN THIS CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. The 3c 1861 Pink (Scott 64) is one of the most difficult stamps of the 1861-66 Issue to find in sound, well-centered, original-gum condition with fresh color. The nature of the ink used to print the 3c Pink shade is such that over the course of time, with exposure to light and other adverse elements, the color tends to oxidize or lose its vibrancy. Collectors who have searched in vain for a 3c Pink in such condition will appreciate the rarity of this stamp in such a remarkable state of preservation. Others who may be less familiar with the rarity of this early 1861 Issue — and perhaps deceived by the abundance of common 3c 1861 shades (Scott 65) — are urged to consider the extreme rarity of Scott 64 in sound original-gum condition. With 2002 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (OGph, XF 90, SMQ value $26,400.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade.

30c Orange (38). Gorgeous centering with unusually wide margins, radiant color as fresh as the day it was printed, neat strike of red grid cancel EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE. AN EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT ISSUE TO FIND IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION. THIS MARVELOUS STAMP FROM THE SENCHUK COLLECTION IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE AND HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E. The narrow space between subjects on the plate makes it almost impossible for the perforations to clear the design on all four sides. The example offered here, with extra wide margins at sides and perfs clear at top and bottom, is a true condition rarity. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ price $13,100.00 as 98). This is the highest grade awarded to date to a Scott 38 in any category, and it is the only example to achieve this grade.

12c Black (36). Plate 1, original gum, almost perfect centering with perforations evenly framing design and showing outer frameline on all four sides EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE PERFORATED 12-CENT 1857 ISSUE FROM PLATE 1 IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. Any multiple of the 1857 12c Black from Plate 1 will demonstrate the narrow layout of this plate, which produced Scott 36. Even when the perforations are aligned between stamps, they still punch out part of the outer frameline. Plate 3, which produced Scott 36B, remedied this problem by allowing more space for perforations. The stamp offered here is completely sound with original gum. It shows the outer frameline on all four sides virtually without interruption. There are very few examples of Scott 36 that exist in condition comparable to that of the stamp offered here. An example in similar condition realized $9,000 hammer in our Sale 913. With 1994 and 2005 P.F. certificates.

5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). With right part imprint selvage, original gum, lightly hinged, exceptionally well-centered and wonderful deep rich color EXTREMELY FINE. A DESIRABLE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE II BROWN 1860 SHADE IN REMARKABLY FRESH CONDITION WITH A PART-IMPRINT SHEET MARGIN. Unlike its Orange Brown counterpart, the 5c Type II in Brown was not on hand in post offices when the 1861 demonetization order took effect. Therefore, original-gum examples of Scott 30A are far scarcer than Scott 30. The narrow spacing between subjects on the plate, as well as Toppan Carpenter’s imprecise perforating, leaves collectors with very few well-centered original-gum examples. With photocopy of 1997 P.F. certificate for right imprint and plate no. strip of three (bottom stamp)
