Jul 25” c.d.s. on 1870 folded cover to Bordeaux, France at the 10¢ Phantom rate, red “New York Paid All Br Transit Jul 30” exchange backstamp with matching red “6” credit handstamp on front, red London (8.10) transit with matching oval “PD” handstamp, Calais (8.11) entry c.d.s. and Bordeaux (8.11) arrival backstamp; small perf faults including some toning, Very Fine. Estimate 2,000 – 3,000 A SCARCE MIXED-ISSUE FRANKING FOR THE 10¢ PHANTOM RATE TO FRANCE. Expertization: signed by Ashbrook. Effective July 1, 1870, the new Anglo-French postal convention reduced the rate between Great Britain and France to 3p per 10 grams, which in turn reduced the Phantom Rate from 12¢ to 10¢ (with a corresponding reduction in credit to GB from 8¢ to 6¢).
