4c Dark Brown, Imperforate (Scott 254a). Bottom imprint and plate no. 50 block of six, large margins, original gum, rich color, top right stamp small thin spot at upper right VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF SIX OF THE 1894 4-CENT IMPERFORATE UNWATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. Full imperforate sheets of 400 of the 3c, 4c, 5c and 10c values were removed from the Bureau and became available to collectors. They were not gummed when they came from the Bureau, but were later unofficially gummed. We have previously sold a left position plate block, in our 1967 Rarities sale. Ex Whitpain. SMQ $275 in the grade of XF-90. Scott $175. Estimate price $250 – 350.

AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1894 4-CENT UNWATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E. — THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED. A TRULY REMARKABLE STAMP. With 1999 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $11,000.00 as 98). This is the highest grade awarded and only one other shares it. We have never seen the other but we would be interested in comparing margin size as this has the widest we have ever encountered.
