7c State, “Sepcimen” Error (Scott O61Sa). Without gum as issued, rich color, nice margins with perfs clear of design all around FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT STATE DEPARTMENT “SEPCIMEN” ERROR. FEWER THAN SEVEN ARE KNOWN. This is the only example we have offered in more than 20 years of auctions and Rarities sales since 1964. Markovits recorded only five known (2004 Bennett sale). There is one in the Miller collection (on extended loan by The New York Public Library to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum). We are aware of only three privately-owned examples: the Lewenthal/Sheriff, Markovits and Golden copies, although other collections no doubt contain a few more examples.
