Scott #99, 24c Gray lilac, “F” grill, an exceedingly rare and eye-appealing used block of four, being quite well centered for this perennially difficult stamp (although expertly reperforated at left), outstanding rich color and impression, postmarked with lovely light strikes of fancy leaf type cancellations in red, very fine appearance; this block is considered to be the finest that exists among the four or five known; ex-Emerson, Anderson and Hanschen. 24c Gray Lilac, F. Grill (Scott 99). Unusually choice centering for this difficult issue, rich color, bold strike of geometric cancel leaves design clearly visible EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1868 24-CENT F GRILL IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT DENOMINATIONS TO OBTAIN IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION. The higher-denomination F Grills were produced in limited quantities and are often found either off-center or with choppy perforations. Brookman notes “A centered copy, lightly cancelled, is indeed a jewel that should be acquired, if offered, regardless of the strain upon the exchequer”. Ex Hinrichs. With 1981 and 2004 P.F. certificates. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Jun 2012, Sale 1024, Lot 167 |

24c Gray Lilac, F. Grill (Scott 99). Incredibly well-centered for this difficult issue, excellent color with face-free cork cancel EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1868 24-CENT F GRILL IS NOTORIOUS FOR POOR QUALITY. THIS SUPERB USED EXAMPLE WITH A FACE-FREE CANCELLATION IS ONE OF THE FINEST WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. The higher-denomination F Grills were produced in limited quantities and seem to have caused National Bank Note Co. difficulty in applying perforations. They are typically off center with very choppy perfs. This stamp has uncharacteristically precise centering and well-formed perforations.
