12c Black, Re-Issue (Scott 107). Original gum, lightly hinged, intense shade and proof-like impression on bright paper, beautiful centering with unusually wide margins EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE. SCARCE WITH SUCH WIDE AND BALANCED MARGINS, AND ONE OF ONLY TWO TO ATTAIN THE COVETED XF-SUPERB 95 GRADE FROM P.S.E.. Only 389 were sold. Of these, very few compare favorably to the example offered here. Ex Odeneal. With 1998 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (OGph, XF-Superb 95, SMQ price $20,200.00). Only one other shares this grade, and only two have graded higher to date.

Scott $5,000 ONLY 389 OF THE 12¢ RE-ISSUE WERE SOLD, OF THOSE THAT HAVE SURVIVED, MOST ARE OFF-CENTERED, TONED, FAULTY AND/OR HAVE LOST THEIR GUM. WITH ITS EXTRAORDINARY CENTERING, WONDERFUL COLOR AND FULL, LIGHTLY HINGED ORIGINAL GUM, THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE CERTAINLY RANKS AMONG THE VERY FINEST EXAMPLES OBTAINABLE. Expertization: 2005 P.S.E. Certificate graded XF-Superb 95. To date only four original gum examples have been graded XF-Superb 95, with only two XF-Superb 95J; none have been graded higher.
