Pa. 4 May” circular datestamp and matching “SHIP” straightline handstamp, neatly pressed vertical file fold affects stamp VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE ON A SHIP LETTER. PERHAPS TWO OR THREE SUCH USES ARE KNOWN. As an inbound ship letter to Philadelphia this qualified for the 6c port-of-entry rate, but since the sender could only choose between 5c and 10c denominations, it was prepaid with 4c additional postage. Ex Gibson. With 1985 P.F. certificate.
