10c Black (Scott 2). Full even margins, deep shade and detailed impression, cancelled by blue grid, matching “STEAM-BOAT” in scroll handstamp on folded letter datelined “Detroit Feb. 20, 1847” and addressed to Buffalo N.Y., manuscript charge box number notation at lower left crossed out and marked “Paid”, faint vertical file fold well away from stamp EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE OF THE BUFFALO “STEAM-BOAT” FANCY MARKING. A GORGEOUS COVER. According to the Alexander book, this marking was applied at Buffalo to non-contract steamboat or ship mail. In this case, the sender applied the stamp to what was originally intended to be a stampless cover with a box-charge notation. After affixing the stamp, he crossed out the number and wrote “Paid”. Illustrated and described in an article in Chronicle 218 (copy accompanies). Ex Hayes and Haas. With 2002 P.F. certificate Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Apr 2012, Sale 1023, Lot 2385 |

10c Black (Scott 2). Three huge margins, ample at bottom, incredibly sharp proof-like impression on nicely blued paper, neat face-free strike of blue framed “Troy & New York Steamboat” waterway route agent’s handstamp used as a cancel VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THIS ROUTE AGENT’S MARKING TO CANCEL THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE. According to the Alexander census book, the marking was used on non-contract steamboats carrying mails between New York City and Troy. At Troy the mails would enter the U.S. mail system (or vice versa). The town circular datestamp would also be used to indicate where it entered the mails, and this is what was used to cancel the stamps on the three known covers. Ex Hall. 10c Black (Scott 2). Full to huge margins with framelines of two adjoining stamps showing at right and bottom, fine impression, Wheeling Va. control grid in red struck across lower right corner, lightly struck blue grid cancels, certificate mentions “light horizontal crease at top” which is barely discernible in or out of fluid EXTREMELY FINE. THE FINEST OFF-COVER EXAMPLE OF THE WHEELING CONTROL GRID ON THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE, OF WHICH A TOTAL OF NINE ARE RECORDED ON THIS VALUE. 1847 stamps with the red grid in one corner and an additional blue cancel of Wheeling are classified as control grid examples. One theory is that the marking served to provide security against post office theft. The Levi-Wall census contains four covers and five off-cover 10c 1847 stamps with the Wheeling Va. control grid. Most of the known copies have defects. In addition, there are four covers and three (possibly seven) off-cover 5c 1847 stamps with the same red control grid. The red grid was applied once to every four stamps, precisely at the center of each block in the sheet. The 5c and 10c 1847 stamps from the first shipment were marked in this manner, but the purpose of the marking has never been established conclusively. Because most of the used examples were cancelled by the customary “Paid” or grid in blue, the Wheeling red grid is not considered to be a true pre-cancellation, which would suffice for mailing without further cancelling. However, at least one cover is known with the 5c stamp cancelled solely by the control grid. Ex Zoellner.
