Positions 16-17, horizontal pair, part original gum, large margins all around, deeply etched impression on fresh paper, pinhole in margin between stamps at bottom EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL-GUM PAIR OF THE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL. Examples of the New York Postmaster’s Provisional with any part original gum are scarce, and pairs are exceedingly rare. This is one of the finest we have encountered. Ex Caspary and Lilly. Scott Retail as unused pair without gum. 1998 P.F. certificate (329413) describing the pair as “previously hinged, part original gum” with pinhole no longer accompanies

With 2010 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98, Postmasters’ Provisionals unpriced in SMQ). While P.S.E. does not publish a Population Report for Postmasters’ Provisionals, their records show only this single example graded 98 for 9X1 and all its listed sub-types
