A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE RARE NEW YORK POSTMASTER’S PROVISIONAL ON BLUE WOVE. In The New York Postmaster’s Provisional, Stanley Piller cites Luff’s statement that the last printing of the New York provisional took place on January 7, 1847, when 100 sheets were delivered. Piller also conveys Philip Wall’s belief that most if not all of the stamps on Gray (Scott 9X3) and Blue (Scott 9X2) papers come from this last printing, as all the known covers are used after that date. As an indication of rarity, in addition to the following lot in this sale this is only the fourth off-cover example we have offered in the last ten years. New York, N.Y., 1845, 5¢ black on blue (Scott 9X2), two singles, both with large even margins, prooflike impressions on deeply blued paper, tied by red square grids (each stamp affected slightly from heavy impression causing small hole in right) on 1847 folded letter to Buffalo N.Y., vivid red “New-York ‘5cts’ Aug 10” c.d.s. postmark also ties right stamp, additional strike adjacent of “New-York Aug 10” c.d.s. without the ‘5’ ratemarking, matching “Paid” in arc handstamp, an Extremely Fine usage. Estimate 7,500 – 10,000 AN EXCEPTIONAL NEW YORK PROVISIONAL COVER WITH TWO EXAMPLES OF THE RARE NEW YORK 5¢ PROVISIONAL ON BLUE WOVE PAPER PAYING THE DOUBLE RATE. Expertization: 1974 P.F.
