$5.00 Dark Green (278). Block of four, slightly disturbed original gum, deep rich color and proof-like impression, bottom right stamp small toned spot on one perf at top not mentioned on accompanying certificates VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1895 $5.00 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN. Apart from the block sold in the Whitpain collection (Siegel 977), this is the only other block of four we have offered in the past ten years. Only one full plate block exists. The Scott Catalogue assigns a paltry $1,000.00 premium for the block versus four singles, which in no way reflects its rarity. With 1972 and 2008 P.F. certificates Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Feb 2010, Sale 983, Lot 173 |

Only one full plate block exists. The Scott Catalogue assigns a paltry $1,000.00 premium for the block versus four singles, which in no way reflects its rarity. $5.00 Dark Green (278). Top imprint and plate no. 85 strip of three with wide selvage, two stamps Mint N.H., left stamp barest trace of what may be either hinging or natural gum skips, h.r. in top center selvage, rich color and proof-like impression VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER STRIP OF THE 1895 $5.00 WATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH TWO MINT NEVER-HINGED STAMPS. This plate strip is exceptional for two reasons. The first is that very few sound imprint and plate number strips of three are known, especially from the top position. The second is that the $5.00 watermarked Bureau issue is an exceedingly rare stamp in sound and Mint N.H. condition. We have offered only four singles plus a plate number and imprint strip of three since keeping computerized records. This remarkable multiple adds two to that count. An excellent alternative to a plate block, of which only one exists (and catalogues $200,000.00). Scott Retail as singles with no premium for the position.
