1c Blue, Ty. IV, Printed “PAID” Precancel (9 var). Vertical pair, both with all capital letters, full margins to just touched, somewhat faulty FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE PAIR OF THE ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH THE “PAID” PRECANCEL. Little is known about the “Paid” precancels on the 1c 1851 Issue. The Ashbrook book illustrates several varieties of actual and supposed precancels. Ashbrook surmises that “the markings… were printed from newspaper type. In all probability the overprinting was done in a newspaper printing plant, and the stamps were used on wrappers enclosing newspapers or more than probable, on the newspapers themselves.” Ashbrook’s theory was borne out by the discovery of a newspaper wrapper, which was sold in our 2004 Rarities sale. 1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Plate 1L, horizontal strip of three, margins to in, used with U.S.P.O., Philadelphia Pa., 1c Black (7LB18), margins to in, strip tied by “Philadelphia Pa. May 4” circular datestamp on piece, center stamp small flaw FINE. A RARE PIECE BEARING A STRIP OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE IV AND THE PHILADELPHIA U.S.P.O. DESPATCH CARRIER STAMP, WHICH WAS CREATED FROM THE SELVAGE OF THE ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE. The Philadelphia carrier stamps printed on the sheet selvage of imperforate 1c 1851 stamps hold a unique position in United States philately. Elsewhere in the world there are very few instances in which sheet selvage was used to produce adhesive stamps — the Emory Va. Confederate provisional and early stamps of Zanzibar come to mind as other examples. Two handstamps were used to create the Philadelphia carrier stamps: the Eagle oval (Scott type C31), which produced 7LB16, and the large oval (type C32), from which 7LB18 was made. These were probably necessary after supplies of the Eagle Carrier ran out in 1856. Ex Neinken. See lot 959 for similar combination with 1c Type II (Plate 2).
