Oct. 25/10” integral-rate circular datestamp on buff cover with ornate large red cameo corner card for “The Syracuse Saleratus Manufacturing Comp’y, Taylor & Co. Propr’s, Also Agents for the Oswego Starch Factory”, addressed to E. Taylor in Detroit Mich., one stamp barely detectable light bend VERY FINE. CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE MOST OUTSTANDING AND DESIRABLE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE ADVERTISING COVER EXTANT. Both potassium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate were marketed under the name “saleratus” in the 1840’s. The Syracuse Saleratus Manufacturing Company was operated by James Taylor & Co., presumably a relation of the addressee, E. Taylor.
