5c Red Brown, Double Transfer (12 var). Position 41R1, clear double transfer lines in letters at bottom, huge margins all around including part of adjoining stamp at bottom and part imprint at right, bold strike of New York circular datestamp EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE PART-IMPRINT COPY OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE, WHICH ALSO HAS A DISTINCT DOUBLE TRANSFER. WE ONLY RECORD THREE STAMPS FROM THIS POSITION. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE. The discovery of the double transfer on this issue was originally made by Stanley Piller in an article in the May 1983 Chronicle. We know that it is a constant, because it is also found on perforated example of the 5c Brown (29) with part imprint selvage. This second stamp also accompanies this lot and is sound.
