12c Black (Scott 17). Position 51R1, huge margins all around incl. left sheet margin and significant part of adjoining stamp at right, bright shade, crisp impression, neat strike of grid cancel, tiny corner crease at bottom left far from design, which is why it was not mentioned on P.F. certificate, even if one millimeter of the left margin were trimmed to remove tiny corner crease it would still be an Extremely Fine Gem (XF-Superb 95 in our opinion), with 1984 P.F. certificate as sound and 2013 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ value $575.00 as 90, $1,175.00 as 95)

Horizontal pair, left stamp double transfer in “U.S. Postage”, huge margins including part of two adjoining stamps, intense shade and detailed impression, neat strike of circular datestamp FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED PAIR OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE ON VERY THIN PAPER. The thin papers are often associated with Part India. The engravings are very sharp and resemble die proofs or plate proofs on India.” Ex Waterhouse, Meyersburg, Koppersmith and Mayer. With 1979 and 2002 P.F. certificates. Scott Catalogue has just listed this variety for the first time, starting with the 2012 U.S. Specialized Catalogue. Scott Retail as singles.

12c Black (Scott 17). Original gum, lightly hinged, huge even margins all around, bright shade and detailed impression on crisp paper, a few tiny toned spots on gum which are so trivial they are not even mentioned on either accompanying certificate EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE WHICH HAS RECEIVED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 FROM P.S.E. AN EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND WITH SUCH LARGE MARGINS AND IN SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. The 12c 1851 plate was laid down with very little room between stamps — just barely one millimeter, to be exact. For this reason, collectors have a difficult time finding stamps with large margins all around. The original-gum example offered here, with its unusually wide margins on all sides, is a true condition rarity. Ex Scarsdale. With 1994 P.F. and 2006 P.S.E. certificates (OGph, XF-Superb 95; SMQ price $20,600.00). This is one of only two original gum stamps graded 95, with none higher.
