A RARE AND SPECTACULAR TOP-ROW PLATE 4 PERFORATED ONE-CENT STAMP WITH WIDE-SPACED PERFORATIONS. The Neinken One-cent book (p. 279) describes the uneven layout of Plate 4, with the top and bottom rows somewhat further apart than the other eight rows of the plate. This irregularity resulted in perfs cutting into the designs of the top or bottom rows. However, some stamps are known with wide-spaced perforations. Only bottom row (Ty. Ia) and top row (Ty. II) stamps from Plate 4 come with extra-wide top and bottom margins. If the sheet was fed in one direction, Type Ia wide-spacing stamps resulted. In the opposite direction, Type II wide-spaced stamps were produced. The Scott Catalogue footnote after No. 19 (Ty. Ia) describes this characteristic, but it is not noted after No. 20 from Plate 4.
