2c Carmine, Ty. I (Scott 319). Mint N.H. with right plate no. 4634 selvage, mathematically precise centering with Jumbo margins, brilliant color on post-office fresh paper EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS STUNNING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT SHIELD ISSUE HAS BEEN GRADED GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E. — THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE POSSIBLE AND ONLY ONE OTHER HAS ACHIEVED THIS ULTIMATE GRADE. Despite its modest catalogue value and large population, the 2c Shield Issue is extremely difficult to find with perfect centering and with wide margins. The four enormous and perfectly balanced margins of this Mint N.H. stamp place it in a totally different category. With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $960.00 as 98). This is the highest grade possible and only one other has achieved this grade.

2c Carmine, Ty. I, Vertical Pair, Imperforate Horizontally (319d). Block of four containing two pairs of the error, deep rich color VERY FINE AND CHOICE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED BLOCKS OF FOUR OF THE 2-CENT 1903 ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. A GREAT RARITY. According to Johl, a block of 25, imperforate horizontally, was found at the Washington D.C. post office. Eight were used for postage, leaving two blocks of four, a strip of three and a pair. This error differs from the more famous so-called “San Francisco roulette”, where a small quantity of sheets was found imperforate between the top two rows only and was rouletted locally. With 1959 and 1998 P.F. certificates. Scott Retail as two pairs

2c Carmine, Ty. I, Vertical Pair, Imperforate Horizontally (Scott 319d). Lightly hinged, brilliant color, choice centering with wide margins at top and bottom EXTREMELY FINE. A WONDERFULLY CHOICE PAIR OF THE 1903 2-CENT SHIELD ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THIS ISSUE. Both blocks of No. 319d were offered in past Siegel sales: one in 2000 (Blumenkopf collection, now offered in this sale) and the other in 2002 (Drucker collection). With 1999 P.S.E. certificate

Vertical strip of three with part arrow selvage at right, stamps Mint N.H., h.r. in selvage, brilliant color, wide margins at top and bottom, horizontal crease between top two stamps FINE-VERY FINE. THE UNIQUE STRIP OF THREE OF THE 1903 2-CENT SHIELD ISSUE IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY. According to Johl, a block of 25, imperforate horizontally, was found at the Washington D.C. post office. Eight were used for postage, leaving two blocks of four, a strip of three and a pair. The strip of three is especially desirable as it is the largest vertical multiple. This error differs from the more famous so-called “San Francisco roulette”, where a small quantity of sheets was found imperforate between the top two rows only and was rouletted locally.
