10c Green, Ty. III (Scott 33). Gorgeous color, with part of selvage at left, neat strike of circular datestamp, beautiful centering with wide margins for this difficult issue EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 10-CENT TYPE III, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E. THIS IS ALSO EXCEEDINGLY RARE WITH THE SELVAGE. The first perforated 10c stamps produced by Toppan Carpenter from sheets printed from Plate 1 are notorious among collectors for their poor centering. The example offered here, with such beautiful centering and with selvage, is a remarkable rarity. A review using Power Search found only one other with selvage (on a cover). With 2000 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo, SMQ $1,950.00 as 95, $7,500.00 as 98). Only one has graded higher (at 98, offered in our recent Natalee Grace sale) and one other shares this grade. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Nov 2012, Sale 1034, Lot 61 |
