10c Green, Ty. IV (Scott 34). Position 86L1, recut at top, Mint Never Hinged, intense shade and proof-like impression, wide margins with perfs clear all around, single faintly toned perf tip at bottom mentioned only for complete accuracy and not noted on certificate EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL 19TH CENTURY UNITED STATES STAMPS THAT EXIST IN MINT NEVER-HINGED CONDITION AND THE FINEST OF THE FEW ORIGINAL-GUM 1857 10-CENT TYPE IV STAMPS EXTANT. The 1857 10c Type IV stamps come from eight positions scattered throughout Plate 1 that have the top, bottom or both lines recut. Only 4% of all 10c Plate 1 stamps produced were Type IV’s, and an even smaller percentage was issued with perforations. Except for a few blocks containing Type IV positions, original-gum examples are exceedingly rare. We know of one other Extremely Fine original-gum single, ex “Ambassador” (Siegel Sale 300), but it is hinged. To the best of our knowledge, this Mint Never-Hinged example is unique in terms of condition and grade. Ex “Angel” and Golin. With 1984 and 1991 P.F. certificates.
