30c Orange (38). Block of 45 consisting of reconstructed blocks of 25 and 20, straddle-pane margin and centerline at right, pretty shade, cancelled by multiple strikes of “Sacramento City Cal. Aug. 21” (ca. 1861) circular datestamps, scissors-separated at bottom affecting a few stamps, few small faults to be expected on a used multiple of this size VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS BY FAR THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE, AND THE LARGEST RECORDED USED BLOCK OF ANY CLASSIC UNITED STATES STAMP. A REMARKABLE ARTIFACT. This was originally a block of 53, which paid the postage on a bag of Gold Dust from Sacramento to Boston. The $15.90 rate corresponds to approximately 80 ounces of weight (at 10c per half-ounce). Ex Ishikawa. Illustrated in Brookman. Scott Retail as ten blocks of four, two pairs and a single.

30c Orange (Scott 38). Deep rich color, well-struck green grid cancel VERY FINE AND FRESH. ONE OF THE FEW HIGH-VALUE 1857-61 STAMPS IN EXISTENCE WITH A GENUINE TRUE GREEN CANCELLATION. Green cancellations were rarely used on the higher denominations of the 1857-61 Issue, because these stamps typically paid foreign-mail rates from large post offices where black, red or blue ink was used. Most 30c stamps that appear to have green cancels actually have blue cancels that blend with the orange color of the stamps to appear green. However, in this case, the cancel is a true intense green color. It is an exceedingly rare item, and we doubt that any finer exists. With 2000 P.F. certificate

30c Orange (Scott 38). Block of four, original gum, lightly hinged, vibrant color as fresh as the day it was printed, top stamps tiny hinge slivers VERY FINE. A RARE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE. A DIFFICULT BLOCK TO FIND IN SUCH WONDERFUL CONDITION. This block clearly demonstrates why it is so difficult to find this issue with choice centering. The narrow space between subjects on the plate makes it almost impossible for the perforations to clear the design on all four sides. This is one of the finest we have ever offered. With 1981 P.F. certificate for block of eight.
