3c Deep Violet (537a). Deep rich color on crisp white paper, bold “Salem Ohio” precancel, choice centering with well-balanced margins EXTREMELY FINE. FEWER THAN 20 USED EXAMPLES OF THE RED VIOLET ARE CURRENTLY KNOWN. As of 2010 the Philatelic Foundation had certified only six singles, one pair (now split) and one block of four as genuine. The other block (uncertified) has a straight edge at right and slight thinning. With 2002 P.F. and 2004 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85, SMQ $1,300.00). Only one has graded higher in the P.S.E. Population Report (at 90) and no others share this grade. In our opinion the SMQ value makes no sense as the VF-XF 85 grade for a perforated stamp should be at least equal to Scott Retail, which in this case is $700.00 more than SMQ Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Oct 2012, Sale 1032, Lot 3629 |
