3c Deep Violet (537a). Deep rich color on brilliant paper, bold “Salem Ohio” precancel EXTREMELY FINE GEM. FEWER THAN 20 USED EXAMPLES OF THE RED VIOLET ARE CURRENTLY KNOWN. The Philatelic Foundation has certified only six singles, one pair (now split) and one block of four as genuine. The other block (uncertified) has a straight edge at right and slight thinning.
