THIS IS REPORTED TO BE THE ONLY RECORDED PAIR OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III ON COVER. A GREAT RARITY. This cover was the subject of an article by Calvet M. Hahn in the Chronicle (November 1982). Hahn’s article correctly notes that Type III multiples can only occur in a few places on Plate 4 where two contiguous Type III positions were present (in this case, two C Reliefs, Positions 69-70L4). Hahn’s article attempts to document the known examples of Type III multiples. He references three off-cover multiples that could potentially contain side-by-side Type III stamps (one of which is offered in this sale as lot 1087). Hahn cites this cover as the only one recorded with a pair. A pair of 1c 1851 stamps was only used for unusual rates: for example, as 2c printed matter rate or drop-letter/carrier rate. Pairs could also be found in strips of three used to pay the domestic rate. Ex Krug and Stanley Cohen (Siegel Sale 666, June 1986 where acquired by Jerry Wagshal). With 1986 P.F. certificate.
