Perfect centering with wide and well-balanced margins all around, incredibly rich and bright colors on fresh white paper, clear strike of cork cancel and top portion of red “New York Paid All Br. Transit” datestamp at bottom EXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT IN EXISTENCE. ONLY THREE OF THE 40 RECORDED USED COPIES ARE CENTERED AND SOUND. A PHENOMENAL CONDITION RARITY. Our recently updated census of 30c 1869 Inverts, available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/121b/121b.pdf , contains a total of 47 stamps, including 7 unused and 40 used (one in the Miller Collection at the N.Y. Public Library). Of the ten used “centered” copies, only three are sound. The other two were offered in our sales of the Zoellner and Twigg-Smith Collections. Census No. 121b-CAN-11. Scott price $11,000 AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 30¢ PICTORIAL PRINTED ON NORMAL PAPER WITH GRILL OMITTED. Expertization: 1978 & 2004 PF Certificates. Provenance: Beckley. Scott now lists two varieties of the ungrilled 30¢: this one on normal paper and one on experimental double paper. The latter is more common, being known in several blocks of four or larger. The Philatelic Foundation has certified about 33 singles or blocks, but does not differentiate between the two papers; only a handful of those with full original gum can be considered well centered.
