Positions 98-100L1E, horizontal strip of three with bottom sheet margin and right straddle-pane margin showing centerline, mostly ample on other sides, just touched at top, tied by red square grids with matching “New-York Jul. 2” (1851) circular datestamp on July 1, 1851 blue folded letter datelined “Rockaway July 1st 1851, Tuesday 1 oclk” and addressed to Dr. Henry W. Bellows in Walpole N.H., written by his wife while she stayed at a beach resort hotel, her postscript reads “We found on our arrival at Union Square this morning…”, therefore, this was undoubtedly mailed from the post office in Union Square on the second morning the new 1851 Issue was available, the strip has tears and slight creases but the overall appearance is attractive AN IMPORTANT ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE COVER, POSTED IN NEW YORK CITY ON JULY 2, 1851, THE SECOND DAY OF ISSUE. ONLY TWO JULY 1, 1851, FIRST DAY COVERS AND TWO JULY 2 SECOND DAY COVERS WITH THE ONE-CENT ARE RECORDED. The addressee, Dr. Henry Whitney Bellows, was a prominent Unitarian minister and anti-slavery advocate. In this letter, his wife describes “luxuriating” at a seaside hotel in the company of Dr. Bellows’ father.
