2c Black, Re-Issue (103). Gorgeous centering with balanced margins, deep shade and impression on fresh crisp paper, lightly applied New York City duplex datestamp and oval grid cancellation EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK RE-ISSUE HAS BEEN GRADED XF 90 BY P.S.E, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE. ONLY 24 USED EXAMPLES ARE CONTAINED IN OUR CENSUS AND THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE IS UNQUESTIONABLY ONE OF THE FINEST EXTANT. Our unpublished census of Scott 103 used contains 24 copies, with approximately 13 that are sound. However, of these only five or six have centering we would consider Very Fine, and perhaps a couple others could be considered Extremely Fine, including the ex Zoellner copy and the blue target cancel copy which is ex Morris, Twigg-Smith and Tahoe (and has a small corner crease). Several of the possibly sound examples have not been examined in decades and may in fact not be sound. The example offered here, with wide balanced margins and a relatively light cancel, is a true condition rarity and arguably the finest example known. In fact, we believe the P.S.E. should have graded this stamp XF-Superb 95, but used 1861-66 Re-Issues are frequently penalized by the P.S.E. for having hallmark genuine duplex or oval cancellations. With 2005 P.F. and 2011 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90, SMQ price $48,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date to a used example and the only example to achieve this grade. The next highest grade is VF 80. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Oct 2011, Sale 1014, Lot 1269 |

Expertization: 2007 PSE Certificate graded XF-Sup 95. While the 2¢ Black Jack Re-issue is not as poorly centered overall as are the regularly issued versions, it is still an exceedingly rare item to come upon in the stellar condition of this example. The last time we handled one of this calibre was in our Exhibition Collection sale of Michael D. Rubin in Spring, 2000, when it was the featured item on the catalogue cover. Over the last decade we have seen one, at most maybe two, worthy of this grade. Matthew Bennett International, Sep 2010, Sale 332, Lot 2014 |
