Block of twelve, bottom two rows Mint N.H., h.r. at top center where few perf separations sensibly reinforced, bright color, top left stamp small translucency FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN IMPRESSIVE BLOCK OF TWELVE OF THE 2-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, WITH THE BOTTOM EIGHT STAMPS IN PRISTINE MINT NEVER-HINGED CONDITION. Any multiple larger than a block of four is rare. Ex “European”. With 2004 P.S.E. certificate. Scott Retail as two hinged blocks of four and two hinged pairs.

2c Brown (Scott 113). Deep rich color, cancelled by “Hiogo, Japan” double-circle handstamp, Extremely Fine example of this cancel which is scarce on the 2c 1869 Pictorial Issue, the U.S. Post Office opened in Hiogo in 1868, one year after those in Yokohama and Nagasaki, and was in operation until December 1874, the rate was 10c to the U.S., 3c or 6c between Treaty Ports and additional rates to Europe, some covers exist with large frankings of the 2c so this denomination must have been readily available in Hiogo, however, we have only offered six other off-cover examples since keeping computerized records and almost all are faulty or off-center, with 1989 P.F. certificate
