15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II, Center Inverted (Scott 119b). Deep rich colors and proof-like impressions on crisp paper, perfs well clear of design all around, neat strike of New York City Large 5-Point Star fancy cancel leaves entire design clearly visible EXTREMELY FINE. THIS STAMP IS WIDELY ESTEEMED AS THE FINEST USED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT EXTANT. THE COLORS ARE REMARKABLE, THE MARGINS ARE WIDE ALL AROUND, IT HAS A STAR FANCY CANCEL, AND IT IS COMPLETELY SOUND. A TRULY REMARKABLE STAMP. Our census of 1869 Inverts, published in the February 1999 Chronicle and updated with three new stamps, contains 93 examples of the 15c Invert, including three unused and 90 used (one in the British Library’s Tapling collection). Fewer than a dozen examples are sound, and this is considered to be the finest truly sound stamp. Census No. 119b-CAN-NC-03. Ex Moody, “Ambassador”, Wunderlich, Kantor and Koppersmith. Horizontal strip of four with bottom left corner selvage with full imprint and “No.” of plate number, original gum, better centering than usually found on multiples of this issue, vignette shifted slightly to left and breaking thru outer line of frame, right stamp expertly rejoined, insignificant crease at bottom left of selvage caused by foldover prior to gumming and not mentioned on accompanying certificate FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE MULTIPLE OF THE 15-CENT TYPE II 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE FROM THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER OF THE SHEET, SHOWING THE FULL IMPRINT AND PART OF THE PLATE NUMBER. A WONDERFUL EXHIBITION ITEM. The 15c 1869 Pictorial Issue was printed from plates of 100 subjects. There were imprint and plate numbers at top printed in the color of the frame, and corresponding imprint and plate numbers at bottom printed in the color of the vignette. The Chapin census records a top part imprint and plate number block of six (ex Wunderlich) and two blocks of 20 with imprint and plate number from the bottom right corner of the plate. This strip, with full imprint and part plate number, may well be the only existing multiple from the bottom left portion of the plate. Ex “European.” With 2003 P.S.E. certificate. Scott Retail as pair and two singles with no premium for the selvage.

Gorgeous centering with wide and balanced margins all around, deep rich colors and proof-like impressions, used with 3c Green (147), tied by circle of wedges cancels and “Providence R.I. Oct. 31” circular datestamp on cover to Athens, Greece, red “New York Nov. 2” transit datestamp at bottom, 1870 docketing at top left, bold “P.D.” handstamp, Vienna and receiving backstamps, red ms. “8” credit for transport beyond Germany, blue crayon rates VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED 1869 15-CENT TYPE II COVERS TO GREECE. A COLORFUL AND EXTRAORDINARY FOREIGN-MAIL USAGE. The 23c rate to Greece by North German Union Closed Mail was reduced to 18c on July 1, 1870 (the 18c NGU Direct rate was reduced to 15c on the same date). This cover was correctly prepaid for the new 18c NGU Closed Mail rate. It was carried on the Guion Line’s Minnesota, which departed New York on Nov. 2, 1870, and arrived off Queenstown on Nov. 14. The other cover to Greece is ex Coulter, and realized $23,000 hammer in our 2009 Rarities sale. This cover is ex Kaplan and Albert

Jul. 4” (1870) circular datestamp and duplex cork cancel on Phantom Rate cover to Paris, France, indistinct red “New York Paid All Br. Transit” backstamp and matching “6” credit handstamp on front, red London (Jul. 19) transit and “PD” oval, Calais transit and Paris receiving backstamp, reduced approx. -2/3 in. at left FINE AND COLORFUL EXAMPLE OF THE PHANTOM RATE TO FRANCE SHOWING A VERY EARLY APPLICATION OF THE 6-CENT CREDIT TO ENGLAND. Effective July 1, 1870, the new Anglo-French postal convention reduced the rate between Great Britain and France to 3p per 10 grams, which in turn reduced the Phantom Rate from 12c to 10c (with a corresponding reduction in credit to GB from 8c to 6c). The 15c stamp is a typical overpayment of the 10c Phantom Rate. The cover was carried on the Cunarder Aleppo on its first voyage, departing New York on July 7, 1870. Ex Hubbard and Coulter. With 2006 P.F. certificate.

A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE QUADRUPLE-RATE FRANKING OF THE 15-CENT TYPE II 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, CARRIED DIRECTLY BY FRENCH PACKET FROM NEW YORK. Carried aboard the French Line H Lafayette, which departed New York on Nov. 27, 1869, and arrived at Brest on Dec. 8.
