o 1875, 5¢ blue, plate crack (179 var.), used block of four with left pair showing the start of the plate crack that runs from Taylor’s right eyebrow downward, cancelled by two strikes of NYFM geometric (Weiss GE-EP4), couple small faults, Fine and rare. Estimate price $2,000 – 3,000 A DRAMATIC PLATE CRACK AND THE ONLY RECORDED MULTIPLE SHOWING THE CRACK. Expertization: 1986 P.F. Certificate. This block shows the top two stamps in the 6-stamp reconstruction of this plate crack originally done by Chambers. The Chambers reconstruction sold in Matthew Bennett sale 268 for $8,250.

Scott price $4,500 A SELDOM SEEN, COMPLETELY SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 5¢ CONTINENTAL “J” GRILL. Expertization: 1986 PF Certificate. In all likelihood, most, if not all, of the J. grills in private hands originated in the archives of Charles Steel, who was employed by both the National and the Continental Bank Note Companies, and who patented the various grilling machines used during the 1867-1875 period.
