3c Green, Double Impression (Scott 184b). Enormous margins on three sides, just barely in at left, bright color clearly showing the double impression, light strike of violet star in circle cancel VERY FINE. THE FINEST OF THE FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 1879 3-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE WITH DOUBLE IMPRESSION. Our list of double impressions is included as an appendix to this catalogue. Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one. Our records contain just four copies of this stamp with double impression, illustrated below and available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/184b/184b.pdf . One has a heavy cancel and a repair, and has not been seen for some time. Another has never been certified. The third shows only partial doubling, and is centered to top left with a small corner crease and tear. With 1985 P.F. certificate.
